The idea

This guide looks under the building instead of inside the room. Every entry answers one factual question: what kind of ground is down there, and what keeps the structure on it. Rock, permafrost, packed snow, river ice, dredged fill, someone else's concrete slab, steel legs over a slope. The eighteen buildings here were chosen because that answer is published, checkable, and shapes everything above it: how large the building can be, whether it is one block or fifteen separate ones, which way it turns, and how you reach the door.
